Why Play?

When I first started teaching, I thought the secret to success was sticking to the guidebook. I meticulously followed every script, every step. But instead of engaging learners, I found myself losing them. The kids were restless, rolling on the floor, and asking about recess every ten minutes. It was clear: my METHOD wasn’t working. Despite the great CONTENT I was trying to teach, they weren’t connecting.

Then, I discovered the power of play. Play transformed everything. It took us from frustration to joy, from zoning out to zoning in. Here’s why play works—and why it’s the foundation of any successful learning experience:

1. Play Sparks Joy

Play allows our brains to release serotonin and dopamine, the “happy” hormones. When we’re happy, our brains are open and receptive. Instead of dreading the next lesson, children look forward to learning because it feels fun and rewarding.

2. Play Deepens Retention

While play may not feel like the fastest way to teach, it’s the most rewarding and effective for long-term retention. When kids are engaged through play, they don’t just memorize—they understand. They connect concepts to real-life scenarios, making it easier to apply what they’ve learned later.

3. Play Makes Learning Enjoyable

When lessons are fun, kids stop watching the clock. They’re not asking, “When’s recess?” because the learning itself feels like play. As a homeschool parent or teacher, you’ll see fewer battles and more smiles.

4. Play Adapts to Any Subject—and Any Age

Whether you’re teaching reading, math, or science, play is a flexible, powerful tool. It also works for every age! I can use the same game template for a 5-year-old, a 12-year-old, and everything in between. By adjusting the content to match their developmental level, the same playful approach can engage learners at any stage.

For parents wondering how to homeschool & support your child best, my advice is simple: Whatever you decide to teach, teach it through PLAY. It’s not about rushing through a curriculum or ticking off boxes. It’s about building curiosity, joy, and a lifelong love for learning.

If this resonates with you and you’d like to learn more, I’d love to connect. Let’s hop on a call to explore how play can transform your homeschool journey & your child’s life. Reach out any time—I’m here to help!
