Welcome to Spark Joy Tutoring!

I’m so glad you’re here. I’m Amy Herzog, credentialed elementary teacher and creative tutor extraordinaire! I come from a lineage of teachers (4th generation) and had dreamt of teaching from the time I entered preschool. I’ve worked professionally with students in Santa Barbara County for 30 years, including a range of children from infants & toddlers with their parents, preschoolers, Kindergarten & 1st Grade where I taught full-time, K-6 subbing, Pre-K -10th grade tutoring, and K-6 reading & writing fluency instruction for the past 10 years.

I am passionate about teaching in FUNdamentally creative and impactful ways to ignite joy in ALL of us as we advance our knowledge and grow together. Naturally a learner myself, I constantly seek out new methods to reach my students and propel them to their greatest heights. You will find me to be incredibly insightful, intuitive, & imaginative. My teacher’s tote–much like Mary Poppins–is brimming with ideas to delight and inspire young learners to probe new areas of interest, problem-solve, and acquire new skill sets.

I have to tell you, tutoring full-time was not on my radar until the quarantine hit and I pivoted from working in a school setting to backyards and bedroom zooms. I have loved working in a school setting, as I adore being part of the larger community, enjoy watching kids grow up through the years, and personally thrive on inspiration from colleagues. Yet, I have to say, the practice of tutoring brings me joy like no other.

The work we do together falls outside of time constraints and curriculum confinements. It is tailored to each child’s unique interests, and thus sparks my creativity to craft engaging lessons in various modalities. My work takes on different roles with each student and after every single session, I say to myself: I LOVE MY JOB! My students and I have so much fun in the process of acquiring new skills and take pride in their achievements. I also delight in witnessing parents/caretakers move from stress to strength: acknowledging with me both the academic and internal progress of their child outside of any other systems but the starting point of our work together to what they have achieved to date. What a joy!
